SEA PORT CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE MOMENTUM GROWTH

Statistics from the Vietnam Seaports Association show that from the beginning of the year until now, container cargo moved through the CM-TV area reached about 2.3 million TEU, increasing over 47% with the same period last year. Previously, shipment from the southern region mainly passed through Cat Lai port; however, now the rate goes through this port is only 60%, the remaining 40% is for CM-TV. For this achievement, CM-TV continues to be in the group of seaports with the fastest growth in the world, with an upturn of about 22% per year.

Within 10 days, Tan Cang - Cai Mep International Terminal (TCIT) has twice of a set record for milestones in cargo handling capacity from a mother ship, from 14,235 TEU on MADRID BRIDGE (June 10) and immediately rise up to 15,615 TEU on MONACO BRIDGE (June 19) of the same shipping line ONE which exploits on the route EC4 by THE alliance, connecting Vietnam and the US East Coast. This is also the highest production for handling capacity on a mother ship of Vietnam ever.

Mr. Akira Kurita, General Director of TCIT Port stated that output over the first 6 months is expected to reach 1.1 million TEU, up to 13% compared with the same period last year. Besides, TCIT port continues to be trusted and chosen by carrier ship as a reliable partner to develop and expand the market in Vietnam. Specifically, in the first 6 months of 2021, TCIT has received 3 new service routes: AA3, AA7 (connecting Vietnam-US) and CI8 (connecting Vietnam-West India) of the Wan Hai shipping line pushing the total number of international service route at TCIT to 11 routes, of which 7 routes are connecting to North America, 1 route connecting to the US-Canada, 1 route to Europe and 2 routes to Inner Asia.

Overcoming the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cai Mep International Port (CMIT) succeeded in greeting two mother ships carrying goods directly to the US which are TP23/LIBERTY/ZSE (2M, ZIM shipping lines), AWE6/ VCE (COSCO and OOCL shipping lines). These are two new service routes that have been put into a run at CMIT connecting Cai Mep with ports on the Asia-East Coast America journey, encountering the rising import and export demand in recent times. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky, General Director of CMIT Port shared: “From the Year to Date, Shipping line alliances have added 8 new service routes to CM-TV, arise the total number of Cai Mep voyage to 32 lines/week, of which the direct line to the US is 19 route/week. Except for TCIT and CMIT ports, the remaining container ports such as Gemalink, SSIT, TCTT… also received 1-2 new service lines. Besides, a feasible for development at these ports is remaining; hence, output of container cargo through has achieved a high growth rate from 40-50%

ROBUST INVESTMENT FOR SEA PORT

To response a market demand carries on increase strongly in CM-TV, the enterprises invested in human resources and devices in 2021 in order to enhance loading and unloading capacity and ensure productive exploitation in high remain.

Mr. Kurita, General Director of TCIT Port informs that TCIT invested in the modern largest shore cranes in Viet Nam which have a capacity of 24 containers along with 22 cranes, 10 tractors and 2 forklifts along with other equipment. In near future, TCIT will continue to equip 3 more shore cranes with larger sizes to replace 3 current mid-sized shore cranes. With these facilities, the port can receive ships from 20 thousand TEU, the extraction scope of TCIT port by 2021 is expected to increase by 1.5 times compared to 2020. As a result, in 2020, TCIT's loading/discharge productivity ship attained 130 containers/hour, which raised to 13% compared to 2019 and achieved a record of loading and unloading 207.4 containers/hour/vessel.

While CMIT had invested in modern shore cranes with 23 containers, along with the investment in accouterments. Enterprise synchronously deployed solutions, business policies and organized production management, improve quality service and abridge ship clearance time for saving costs.

The province is focusing on investing in infrastructure and traffic connections to enlarge connectivity ports to significant industrial zones and economic centers in the South. This has contributed to creating a prime transformation for the seaport system. In particular, port logistics services have made positive changes. The entire province currently has 20 logistics warehouse projects are operating with a total area about 224 hectares; Additionally, there are 10 projects under construction with a total area of about 42 hectares. Aside from that, many essential transport projects connecting seaports are being urgently completed such as road 991B, Phuoc Hoa-Cai Mep road, Long Son-Cai Mep road. Furthermore, the province is rushing to complete investment procedures to soon deploy many other projects such as Bien Hoa-Vung Tau highway, Phuoc An bridge…

INVEST IN INLAND PORTS CONNECTING SEAPORTS

Inland Container Depot (ICD) is considered a crucial link in seaport transport, donating to reduce transportation costs and time of cargo storage at deep-water seaports (where ships are received). Nevertheless, at present, the development of ICD in BR-VT is not being properly attended for investing; thus, the potential and advantages of seaports have not been fully exploited.

Mr. Tran Hoai Chan Tam, SSIT Port Manager (Phu My Town), admitted that ICD's system in CM-TM Port is relying on ICDs for instance Ho Chi Minh City Dong Nai and Binh Duong. For this reason, invest in building system Inland Container Depot in Ba Ria- Vung tau Province is an urgent mission to promote the advantages of the CM-TV Port cluster. Lack of ICD is one of the reasons that lead to tough for CM-TV Port cluster to "captivate" cargo in recent years. According to the Provincial Customs Department, the province currently has about 1,000 enterprises operating in the field of import and export, although more than 80% of enterprises do not carry out import and export procedures at the CM-TV port cluster but bring goods to Cat Lai Port. (Ho Chi Minh City). The service activities of receiving and releasing goods are often prolonged as well as reason that investors afraid of handling shipment in CM-TV Port cluster.

Faced with that fact, seaport experts of the People's Committee of BR-VT Province should propose the Vietnam Maritime Administration and the Ministry of Transport to supplement the planning of Inland container port in the Phu My - Cai Mep area (with an area of 50-200 hectares) and in My Xuan (area of 25-75 hectares) in the "Master plan for the development of Vietnam's seaport system in the period of 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050". Based on the planning and the actual operation of the CM-TV Port cluster, accounting for more than 40% of the country's export market, BR-VT fully meets the criteria for developing the inland port system. The promotion of the development of ICDs will support more efficient exploitation of the seaport system, and at the same time create favorable conditions for import-export businesses.
